If you have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx GPS, do not buy Garmin’s bike mount because it does not fit. Buy this rail mount instead to mount the GPS on a bicycle handlebar. The adapter that comes with the Vista HCx clips right in to this rail mount.
Unfortunately, this mount is not as secure as the mount Garmin makes for their Edge GPS units and it only allows you to mount the GPS on your handlebar, not on the stem.
There is also a larger diameter version for fatter handlebars (like most road bikes): Garmin Large Diameter Rail Mount Adapter (010-10496-00)
I have had my mount on my mountain bike for a year now and I have only lost my Garmin Etrex Vista Hcx once. It wasn’t the mounts fault. The screw holding the snap in piece jiggled loose and disconnected form the GPS. Recommended to anyone who wants a GPS mounted to their bike!
This mount is very well made, and easily fits my one inch mountain bike handlebars using the thin rubber spacer provided. There is also a thicker rubber spacer provided that I did not need; with the full combination of included spacers this mount will fit handlebars from 1 inch to significantly less than 1 inch in diameter. For larger handlebars (such as some road bikes), Garmin offers a larger mount, called the ‘large diameter rail mount’, available on Amazon. This mount stays tight on my bar; to move it I must loosen the screw, so my Vista HCx GPS and mount do not move, even on the roughest off-road riding conditions. There is a very slight, barely perceptable amount of play between the mount and the GPS device, so some vibration could occur between the two on rough surfaces; never a good thing for electronic devices. I did spend quite some time positioning this mount, my dual headlights, and my Polar heartrate monitor/bike computer so that I could reach the controls of all and not have them rubbing against each other. So, now everything is spread out across my handlebar and there is no room to add another device. This mount works quite well, is very secure, and holds my GPS in place at an angle that is easily readable. The only improvements I would suggest to the manufacturer is the change to a quick release system rather than the present screw attachment system, and some sort of tension device to take up any looseness between the mount and the GPS (a small raised plastic hump ’spring’ perhaps). This would allow easy exchange from one bike to another, and eliminate any play between the mount and the device. I would certainly recommend this mount to anyone with the Vista HCx GPS, or other similar Garmin GPS that includes a quick release piece that will fit.
